Standing Start
Base on
the distance, running events that come under athletics are classified into three
groups, namely short distance (Sprinting), middle distance and long distance running. The
type of start changes according to the running
distance athlete has to run during the race.
What is Standing Start?
Standing start is basic starting technique used by middle and long-distance runners. Generally race longer than 400 m distance are taken by standing start. For young athletes learning how to compete in race, standing start is a most excellent way to start.
When a athlete is ready for race ,he takes a standing position on the track and puts his one leg little ahead of other keeping it inside the start line and upper body lean in forward direction. Such start is called a standing start. At this time the weight of body should be on the front foot and arms swinging in opposite direction to that of leg movement.
Two commands are given for the standing start.
1. On your marks
Athlete takes Standing position
Front Foot inside the start line with body weight on it
Second foot one foot (shoulder width) behind with heel lifted
Keep the arm of opposite side of front leg in front and other back
2. Go
A Flag is given or starter gun is fired
Race begins
Stay
Strong, Stay Fit
