Importance of Block Start
Sprinting
is a game of speed, where finishing a race varies in milli-seconds. When a
sprinter starts the race what he needs is the maximum push / acceleration.
As in
cricket it said “Catches win Matches”, in the same way it can be said in
sprinting that a perfect start with fastest acceleration right from the start
line will help you to win the race.
What is Block Start?
Starting
blocks is a adjustable equipment with two footplates that are used by sprinters for gaining the maximum push.
These are designed in such a manner which facilitates stable platform and gives
a support to the athlete feet for the push and acceleration required at the
time of start. When the race is about to begin, sprinters take their position
on the track, places their feet on the blocks with their hands immediately
behind the starting line (Sitting start or Crouch Start). Once the gun is fired athletes pushes the feet on the
block pad with maximum power to get the fastest start and speed required. New
beginners should properly train themselves for the use of start blocks.
Commands at the start of Competition:
1.On your marks
Athlete comes on track and take his position on starting block
(Ensure both feets firmly on footplates & one knee touching ground)
2. Set
As set command is given athlete
Elevates his hip above the shoulder height
Leg positioned to proper angle
Hold the position
3. Go
Starter gun is fired or Flap is hit
Bring rear leg forward by giving maximum push on block pad
Accelerate
Benefit of using starting blocks:
1.
Helps in getting correct body posture at the start.
2.
Block pads provide a stable platform to feet required for the push.
3.
Helps in gaining acceleration and momentum.
4.
Helps in reacting quickly as starter gun is fired.
